Through some projects I have been working on for a few brands focusing on their Instagram strategies, I quickly have realized that Instagram is probably the best channel for car salespeople to connect with local people in their marketplace.
Car sales are in the end a local business. For the most part, the prospects you do business with most likely live in or close to your town/city.

I’m sure by this point you are familiar with Instagram, and that is strictly a visual platform.
Instagram doesn’t have the articles, text-based posts, and advertisements that it’s parent company Facebook does.
The culture on Instagram is less cluttered and noisy which makes it easier for you to connect, compel and convert new business using it.

How To Build A Local Targeted Audience On Instagram
1. Search Instagram Tags –
Searching Instagram tags is an easy way to connect with people who are in your primary marketplace.
An Instagram “tag” is what they call a hashtag.
No matter the size of your city or town, there are several tags are dedicated to your city, town, neighborhoods, sections or even popular local events.
To search for your local tags click the search/magnifying glass icon which you will find at the bottom of your page on Instagram the second from the left.
Once you click the search icon click on the search bar at the top of the page.
Next, you will see, popular, people, tags, and places. You will want to select tags and from there type in your city/town.
Once you type in the name of your city Instagram will also populate a bunch of other tags that are similar to the keyword you searched.
Click on the tag you want and Instagram will filter and deliver you all the posts that contain that tag.
Click on those posts and follow the people you can confirm live in your marketplace and are not visiting. Chances are they will follow you back.

2. Search Places –
Like I mentioned above no matter the size of your city and town there are posts made there… Go to search, and this time instead of searching tags you will select “places.”
Places on Instagram is like Facebook, and you add your location to your status update.
Type your city/town into the Instagram search bar, and just like Instagram tags, it will also provide you with other places that are relevant to your city search.
Select your city and all the posts made that the user added your city and state to their Instagram post will all be right in front of you.
Filter through these posts and follow the profiles of people who are living in your marketplace.

3. Find Local Businesses –
While you are doing step one and step two, you will come across some local businesses operating in your backyard.
You will come across other car dealers, other salespeople, restaurants, bars, clothing, and other popular businesses in your marketplace.
Once you find some local business hot spots, click on their profile and from there click on their followers.
One of the coolest things you can do on Instagram is looking at the followers of businesses and individuals.
Filter through their followers and follow the ones that you can tell live local and would benefit from your product and services.

Engage With Local Individuals Instagram Posts
After you locate and then follow individuals Instagram profiles in your marketplace make sure to like and comment on a few of their posts to boost engagement.
Doing so will increase the probability that the individual will notice you and better yet follow you back.
Another quick tip before we wrap this up is you can’t be afraid to use Instagram’s direct message feature to introduce yourself properly.
There is a lot of power in the Instagram’s direct message feature because although Instagram is insanely popular people are sleeping on their direct message feature.
Most people’s direct message inbox on Instagram is dry, (no messages) which make it even easier for you to stand out and to stand out in this busy marketplace is the name of the game.
